Thanks to some sleuthing by Portland’s KATU news team, it was revealed yesterday that Thomas was sitting in the passenger seat next to Oregon’s star cornerback, Cliff Harris, when he was pulled over for speeding back in June. This marks the third time since 2008 that the Ducks’ captain has been a passenger in the car of a teammate when it was pulled over by the authorities.

Harris was eventually charged with speeding in excess of 100 MPH (note in the video that the cop has to go 141 MPH just to catch up with them).

However, according to this news report, the real scandal in all this is the fact that the cops smelled marijuana in the car, and Cliff Harris confesses that they “just smoked it all.”

I don’t know about you, but I am shocked and appalled to learn that college kids are smoking pot. Shocked and appalled.

Being a fisherman myself, I have always dreamed about catching a record-breaking largemouth bass.  That dream has now changed after hearing that there are giant blocks of marijuana swimming in the water at Corpus Christi, Texas.  This guy was lucky enough to find one of those giant blocks on the end of his line during a recent fishing trip.

About 99.99% of the time it isn’t a good thing to get hooked on weeds, but this is definitely part of the other 0.01%.

As for lessons two, three, and four, they include feeding your munchies with ham sandwiches, not leaving your hazards on, and the always important “puff, puff, pass” rule, which Randy Johnson seems more than willing to break.  Maybe Tim should consider looking for some new smoking partners.  I hear Michael Phelps and Geovany Soto are quite lonely this time of year.

In a report yesterday, it was revealed that Lincecum was caught with some pot in his car:

“Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner and former star at the University of Washington was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 about four miles north of the Oregon border on Oct. 30.

“An officer approached Lincecum’s 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana. Schatzel says Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe.

“The amount measured was 3.3 grams. Schatzel says police consider that a small amount for personal use.”

So is it that hard to believe that a guy who has long goofy hair and dresses like kind of a stoner would turn out to actually be a stoner?  I’m not that surprised.  I also don’t think this will hurt him in any real way in terms of his contract or actual baseball playing.  Although if he’s anything like Geovany Soto, he should watch out.  After testing positive for marijuana in the World Baseball Classic, he went on to have a terrible season.

Michael Phelps learned that very lesson last year when only a few months after he won an outstanding eight gold medals at the Summer Games in Beijing, he was captured in a picture taking a hit of marijuana from a bong.  Fortunately he was able to rebound from all the bad publicity and is back to his winning ways.

Things don’t always turn out so smoothly.  Just look at Michael Beasley‘s recent life developments.

Beasley posted a picture of his new tattoo on his Twitter page which caused a stir among many.  The controversy was not regarding the image he had imprinted on his back, but the baggies that appeared on the floor in the background.  Many speculate that they contained marijuana, and after being heavily discussed, the Heat forward had heard enough.  He posted the following messages on his Twitter page moments before eventually deleting his account:

“Y do I feel like the whole world is against me…I can’t win for losin,” Beasley wrote.

“Feelin like it’s not worth livin!!!!!!! I’m done.”

Beasley has since checked himself into a Houston rehabilitation hospital after being encouraged by the Heat to seek help for substance abuse and psychological issues.  He is also likely to meet with John Lucas, a former NBA player and coach who is known for working with troubled players.

Whether the former No. 2 overall pick can become another success story is the question that Heat fans will have to wait to have answered.

So how does one beat a top-flight Michael Phelps?  Let’s just say the secret is in the suit.

This year FINA (the international swimming body) has found themselves in the middle of a debate over the new swimsuits being worn by several of the competing swimmers.  Records continue to fall at an outstanding pace, and many believe it has something to do with the buoyancy-enhancing, friction-reducing polyurethane outfits being used in races.  Phelps and his coach, Bob Bowman, are just two of the individuals who have voiced a concern.

Phelps finished second to Germany’s Paul Biedermann in the 200-meter freestyles in Rome.  His winning time was fast enough to set the new world record, previously held by Phelps.  Following the race, Bowman had the following to say:

“The sport is in shambles right now. They better do something or they’re going to lose their guy who fills these seats.” [USA Today]

Even Phelps made his opinion known to reporters, stating that “It’s not swimming. I’m looking forward to the day that we’re able to call our sport swimming again.”  Phelps did however stop short of taking all the credit away from his opponent, admitting that Biedermann was in fact in better shape for the race.

Where swimming will go from here remains to be seen.  Reports indicate that tighter standards may be set on swimsuits.  Whether this will lead to a naked Amanda Beard swimming in the 2012 London Games is anyone’s guess.  Just think of the possibilities.

Piniella’s experience with smoking the chronic has helped him cope with Soto’s actions, and that’s a good thing for the Cubs catcher, who will not be disciplined by MLB or his team for the positive test.  Piniella spoke to the media prior to the Cubs game against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, and had the following to say:

“Look, I have smoked dope one time in my life.  And it didn’t do a damn thing for me, and I never tried it again. I’m fortunate because of that. A lot of people do. You can even buy it in California from a pharmacy.

“I do know young people make mistakes at times and learn from mistakes. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life personally, and I’ve learned from them.” [ESPN]

Piniella never seems to disappoint when speaking to the media about his players mess-ups.  He was almost at a loss for words after Milton Bradley’s bad day at the ballpark, but this time he showed us all that everyone needs to get a little high some times.  Even Lou (maybe that’s why he’s been rather calm lately).  Now what’s the address of that pharmacy again?

Soto represented Puerto Rico during this year’s WBC, but he will not be representing his country in international competition over the next two years as part of his disciplinary action.  In a statement released today, Soto stated that this is not something he usually partakes in (no surprise there).

We are still waiting on his bong pics, al la Michael Phelps.  Good thing he doesn’t live in Sheriff Lott’s county.

Soto released the following statement:

“While I fully acknowledge my inappropriate behavior, I want to assure my fans and my family that this was an isolated incident.

“I do not say this to minimize or deflect from my conduct and I fully understand the ramifications of my actions. I have and will accept any and all consequences.

“I am fully dedicated to the game of baseball and my teammates, and I apologize for any distraction and embarrassment this may cause them.

Finally, I would like to thank the Chicago Cubs organization for its support in this matter. I take great pride in putting on my Cubs uniform every day and I look forward to helping the team achieve a successful season.” [Chicago Sun-Times]

Soto will not be disciplined by the Cubs or the MLB, and rightfully so.  Performance-enhancing drugs have no place in sports, but performance-decreasing ones should not be looked at in a similar fashion.  And if you don’t think so, try hitting a 95 mph fastball while high.

The Western Canadian city is known for its marijuana indulging community, which is what makes the shape of the torch all the more ironic.  While it is unlikely any changes will be made to it, we expect this to receive some attention throughout the Torch Relay, which begins October 22, 2009 in Athens, Greece.

“A lot of people come to Vancouver because it’s marijuana-friendly, so I think people who already enjoy a joint themselves will feel a little more kinship to the Olympics,” said Emery, who ran as a Green party candidate in the provincial election this month.

“I’m sure the organizers didn’t intend for it to look like a joint, but that’s what a lot of people are seeing.” [TorontoStar]

It is doubtful the torch will be hijacked by any pot heads or Michael Phelps along its trip through Canada, but we are hoping to see some cool pics of stoners taking some puffs out of the over-sized dube.  Or maybe this is all just in my head, and pretty much every Olympic torch can be said to look like a joint.  But for now, I know what I see.
