With the 2011 Winter Classic set for Heinz Field, members of the two competing teams gathered on the gridiron to shoot around some pucks. But rather than aiming for the nets, which is what they’ll be doing on New Years Day, Sidney Crosby, Max Talbot and Pascal Dupuis of the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with David Steckel and Mike Knuble of the Washington Capitals set their sights on the large yellow field-goal posts at the back of the end zone.

Players from both teams competed in an event to see who could split the uprights more often. As for the winner of the competition, I am still trying to figure that one out. Here is some footage of the five combatants going at it. See if you can figure out a champion.

Sidney Crosby is the future of the NHL. He may not be the best player in the league yet (although a lot of people would argue he is), but it has become very clear that he can live up to the hype and may finish as one of the all-time greats. But every legend has a beginning and Crosby is no different.

The story about Crosby goes like this. He used to sit around in his basement all day and night shooting pucks into a dryer and that’s how he got good. With stories like that, they usually stay legends, shrouded in the fog of myth and tall tales. In this new Reebok commercial, however, Crosby bears all when it comes to the famous dryer. Commercials range from funny to odd these days, but this one is better than them all. Accompanied by his teammate and friend Max Talbot, he takes us into the basement of his parents house in Nova Scotia and shows us the dryer.

Instead of diminishing the myth, seeing the dryer actually enhances it. It has been all dinged up from years of pucks banging off it. And to everyone’s delight, he challenges Talbot to a game and smokes him in it 9-4. Talbot leaves us with a hilarious dig at Sid about how Sid didn’t score anything in game 7 last year and Talbot had 2 goals. It’s all in good fun though.

This is one of the best commercials I’ve ever seen. I love anything that takes you back to before the stars were stars and see how they got there.

Ladies and Gentlemen we now have a series!

It looked scary for a while as Pens fans saw their team go into the second intermission being badly outshot 26-11, but the third period would be theirs, out-shooting the Wings 10-3 and outscoring them 2-0, one of those goals being an empty-net. How did they do it? Mostly on the backs of Evgeni Malkin (3 points), Marc -Andre Fleury (27 saves), and a surprise 2 goals from Max Talbot. Despite such great individual efforts, it was a complete team effort in the third, with all four lines and six d-men skating hard, taking the body, and moving the puck well. That would be too much for the Wings over the final 20 minutes, as they looked like the more tired of the two teams, and the final score reflected just that.

The game started off with a goal scoring spree in the opening period. The Pens got on the board first after a Max Talbot one-timer from the slot found its way past Wings goalie Chris Osgood. Less than two minutes later, Henrik Zetterberg grabbed a lose puck in front of the net and brought the Wings even again. They would take the lead on a Johan Franzen one-timer, but Kris Letang would even it up again on the power-play.

The second period was tight checking and as a result the score never changed. That would set the stage for the most important period of the post-season for the Penguins.

They replied, first with a power-play goal from Sergei Gonchar mid way through the third, then Talbot would seal it with an empty-net goal, his second of the night.

With the series now 2-1 in favor of the Wings, game 4 in Pittsburgh on Thursday will once again be much like an elimination game for the Pens. They will not want to go down 3-1 to the Wings for the second year in a row, as it is a daunting task to beat the defending Stanley Cup champions three consecutive games, especially with two of those being in Detroit.

Sidney Crosby was able to find the score sheet for the first time in the series last night, but even with last change on home ice, he still had a difficult time getting away from Henrik Zetterberg. One man who did have more room on the ice was Evgeni Malkin, and he responded with a large offensive output.

The Pens will need the same from him and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, as well as an improvement from Crosby in order to win three more games. They will also hope that the Wings do not get their star forward Pavel Datsyuk back for game 4. His presence means another strong defensive forward that will make things even tighter for the playoffs two leading scorers. Oh ya, and did we mention that Pavel was 4th in the league in points? Things might only get more difficult for the Pens from here, but if they expect to raise Lord Stanley, they will have to find a way to deal with it. Otherwise it will be Deja Vu all over again.

Here are the game 3 highlights.

The Penguins had a great one out last year featuring Colby Armstrong, Max Talbot, Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin in an A&L BMW commercial. Now the people at Mercedes Benz of Alexandria have taken full advantage of the acting skills of Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau.

These things just keep getting better and better. I caught one last night during the Flyers vs Caps game on Comcast. Just one question. Is it me or is there something about the way Bruce can lure two grown men into a ride in his Benz.

Here are both of Boudreau’s commercials in case you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing them yet.

After watching these commercials I seem to have the urge to by a Mercedes Benz. And in case you missed it, here is the Penguins famous commercial:
