For a moment it seemed like Déjà Vu all over again. The Washington Capitals qualified for the playoffs as the top team in the Eastern Conference, but after taking a 2-0 series lead, they were only 20 minutes away from allowing the New York Rangers to get right back in the series with a Game 4 victory. A 2-2 series and the possibility of exiting in the first round of the playoffs for the second year in a row seemed all but certain, until the Capitals were saved by a rather unlikely source.

After Alexander Semin scored less than three minutes into the third period to pull the Capitals to within two, it was Marcus Johansson’s turn to play hero. The 20-year-old center would record his first goal of the post-season less than one-minute later, before eventually scoring the game-tying goal and completing the improbable comeback for the Capitals.

Jason Chimera’s goal in double-overtime would help make sure that Johansson’s two-goal effort didn’t go to waste, as Washington took a 3-1 stranglehold on the series, thanks to the 4-3 victory. Chimera may be anointed as the overtime hero, but it is Marcus Johansson who earns our “Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, April 20, 2011.

Total Pro Sports – With 1:30 left in the first, the Canes were close to completing a strong period and going into the dressing room tied 1-1. That was before a harmless looking Maxime Talbot wrist shot deflected off the stick of Anton Babchuk and somehow made it past Canes goalie Cam Ward at what must have been no faster that 3 mph. That goal would seemingly take the wind out of the sails for Carolina, and the Pens would capture the Eastern Conference championship with a 4-1 final.

It is difficult to blame Cam Ward for the loss, as a team is unlikely to win when it can only manage to score one goal, which came in the opening minutes of the game. The Talbot marker, however, did take momentum away from the Hurricanes, and give it to Pittsburgh going into the break. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and the Pens would not look back from there, netting four unanswered goals in the game and completing the series sweep on route to the Stanley Cup Finals where it looks like they will once again meet the Detroit Red Wings.

The Wings square off against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at Joe Louis Arena in game 5, up 3-1 in the series. They will be without the services of superstars Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Lidstrom for the second straight game. It did not seem to slow them down last time in a 6-1 victory and they will be hoping for a similar result tonight.

Should the Wings end the series in this evening’s game 5 contest, the finals will begin on Saturday, May 30th in Detroit. If not, game 6 of their series will take place in Chicago that same Saturday night.

Here is the Talbot goal. Talk about bringing back the knuckle puck. “OMG” indeed!
