It appears as though Austin Rivers has learned a thing, or two, from all those championship Celtics teams his dad has coached over the past seven NBA seasons. After watching the likes of Ray Allen and Paul Pierce hit clutch shot after clutch shot at the end of games, en route to two Eastern Conference titles and one NBA title, Austin decided to show his dad that he can exhibit an ice-cold demeanor and come through down the stretch as well when given the chance.

His opportunity to prove himself came last night during a much-anticipated ACC battle between the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina Tar Heels at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, and he did not allow it to pass him by. After helping his Blue Devils erase a 10-point deficit during the final 2 1/2 minutes of the game, Rivers capped the incredible comeback with a three-point buzzer beater that soared over the outstretched hand of UNC’s 7-foot center Tyler Zeller, before dropping through the rim and silencing the raucous North Carolina crowd.

Doc Rivers was in attendance for the game, along with his gorgeous daughter, and while we’ve seen the Celtics coach celebrate some great moments during his NBA coaching career, none of those moments seemed to excite him as much as watching his son cap a career-high 29-point performance with a cluth game-winning basket at the buzzer.

Check it out.

Obama did try his hardest to shake as many hands as he could both before and after Saturday’s game, but as you would imagine, there were plenty of hands that were left hanging. Interestingly enough, we have a video compilation of people being stiffed for handshakes by Obama.

Jeff Teague had a career game as he scored a career high 34 points on 9-17 shooting, including 13-15 from the charity strip. The Demon Deacons remained one of only three undefeated teams left in Div 1 basketball and push their home record to a perfect 9-0. Long gone are the days of Chris Paul but it has only taken the program a couple of years to get back to respectability.

Will the the demon deacons be ready to make a run in March?

I’m not sure, we will have to evaluate their progress as the year moves on but beating North Carolina is definitely a positive step.

Meineke Car Care Bowl Game Preview

We have an intriguing match up in this years Meineke Car Care Bowl Game, The North Carolina Tar Heels, a program that has been a bottom dweller of the ACC for many years now is emerging as a legitimate contender.

The West Virginia Mountaineers seem to be headed in the opposite direction as they lost more games this year then the past 2 years combined. When Rich Rodriguez left the program to coach at Michigan, he left behind a talented team, that has underachieved under new head coach Bill Stewart. The Mountaineers, a team known for their ability to run the ball, with their option-style attack went to the air a lot more this season which proved to be less effective. This will be Pat White’s final game, the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher from the quarterback position will attempt to lead his team to a fourth straight bowl victory. The Mountaineers will rely on their solid defense, in large part as to why they finished with 8 wins, the defense features big play potential at all positions.

The Tar Heels have enjoyed one of their best seasons in recent memory, they now have an opportunity to win their first bowl game since the 2001 season. They have a chance to do it in front of a predominantly home crowd in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Tar Heels have faced adversity this season, losing starting quarterback T.J. Yates the third week of the season, in stepped backup Cameron Sexton and filled in quiet nicely for the Tar Heels. The Heels will look to attack the Mountaineers through the air, with 1000 yard receiver Hakeem Nicks, the big play potential for the Tar Heels will be there. North Carolina was 8 points away from an 11 win season losing to Virginia Tech, Virginia and Maryland by 3, 3, and 2 points respectively.

Meineke Car Care Bowl Game Prediction

These teams match up pretty evenly and we expect this game to be close down the stretch. Pat White is comfortable in the big game, he has led the Mountaineers to four straight bowl victories, this one will have the feel of a road game. The Tar Heels will be playing this game on adrenaline, for most of the players it’s their first bowl appearance as a Tar Heel, their nerves may come into play in this game. We expect the Mountaineers to play an emotional game for their senior quarterback.

The Bulls looked flat and you had the idea that the longer the Panthers hung around in that game the better chance they had to pull it out. LeSean McCoy looked sensational by making Bulls’ defenders miss all game, the kid will be playing on Sundays. Both the Utes and Cougars from the Mountain West remained undefeated with wins early in the week.

Our record through 2 weeks is 3-3 but we are confident it will be 6-3 following this week.

Let’s take a look at the free college football picks for Saturday.

1. Connecticut Huskies @ North Carolina Tar Heels (-7.5, O/U 46.5)

Pick: Connecticut Huskies +7.5 : Who is the ranked team in this game? Both teams are missing their starting quarterback so the running game will be important in this one. The Huskies feature Heismen candidate Donald Brown, who leads the nation in rushing and second in touchdowns. We like our chances with Huskies, play the points.

Preview

Matchup

SuperGrid

2. Arizona State Sun Devils @ California Golden Bears (-8.5, O/U 54)

Pick: Over 54: We like the over in this contest because both teams can light up the scoreboard and create huge plays on offense. Both quarterbacks have confidence in their ability and both offences share synchronicity. Defence will be an afterthought as these teams will be trading points all night long. We predict a final score of 45-34 in favor of the Golden Bears.

3. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers @ Virginaia Tech Hockies (-28, O/U 43.5)

Pick: Virginia Tech -28: This Western Kentucky team has really struggled against big name programs with big loses at Indiana, Alabama and Kentucky, this week against Virginia Tech may be tougher. The Hockies are playing good football since an opening season loss to East Carolina, Frank Beamer has his team playing to their capability. We expect the Hockies to jump on this team early and the defence to minimize the Hilltoppers opportunities.

The game was a dramatic one between Oregon St and the Utah Utes, the Beavers scored a touchdown to go up 8 points late in the game, only to see the Utes of Utah battle back and score 11 straight, including the game winning field goal with 1 second left on the clock.

Last week we began with an upset filled Thursday, which led to an eventful Saturday, which saw 4 top tens lose. This week may be just as lucky as some games have the potential to be shockers.

Let’s look ahead at the most anticipated College Football games of the weekend.

1. Kentucky Wildcats @ Alabama Crimson Tide - The Crimson Tide are making a serious run at a National Championship, with their most impressive victory in years coming last week against a solid Georgia Bulldogs. After this huge win the Crimson Tide have proven they are a force this year. This week they play the Kentucky Wildcats, a team like themselves, that are undefeated. Since opening the season with a decisive victory against a decent Louisville team the Wildcats have faced mediocre competition and won. They may find their opening SEC game quite the challenge, Curtis Pulley will have to play the game of his life for the Wildcats to pull this one out.

2. Auburn Tigers @ Vanderbilt Commodores – Who knew the Commodores would be unbeaten this late into the season. Of all the SEC teams that remain consistent each year the Commodores are not one of them. Vanderbilt reached the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1984, this week they look to take another step forward as they host the offensively challenged Auburn Tigers. The Tigers come into the game averaging 19.9 PPG, which is not bad considering they have a very good defence, however they have been held under 15 points twice this year and the quarterback situation is a complete chaos. The Commodores may be able to start the season 5-0 for the first time since WWII.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes @ Wisconsin Badgers - The Badgers come into this game with revenge on their minds, it’s too bad they have to play the Buckeyes. Wisconsin blew a fourth quarter lead in Ann Arbor last week and may look back at the end of the season and say “what if”? As for the Buckeyes they make their first trip to Madison in nearly five years, the last time they played there they took a 19 game winning streak, only to lose it. This is an important game for both teams, the winner will be the team that is more physical and can control the line of scrimmage.

4. Oregon Ducks @ Southern California Trojans - If you like shootouts, this may be the place you want to be. Both teams feature explosive offences, however both teams have injuries at the quarterback position. With Mark Sanchez nursing a knee injury, the Ducks however, have more serious issues with their top 2 quarterbacks inactive for this game. The Ducks will now have to turn to Jeremiah Masoli. The Trojans need a bounce back game, but they know it won’t be easy against an Oregon team that beat them last year and has the ability to do it again.

5. Missouri Tigers @ Nebraska Cornhuskers - It’s been 30 years since the Tigers have won at Nebraska and their fans are wondering if it will ever happen again. They have a great opportunity this weekend as the Tigers have looked nearly unstoppable in non-conference play. The Tigers should be motivated for this game, three teams that sat above them in the power rankings last week lost and dropped down. This opens the door for the Tigers and a National Championship. The Cornhuskers on the other hand are coming of a loss at home to Virginia Tech, a team that has been playing well of late. Nebraska needs to be focused on defence, last week they forced the Hockies to kick field goals, they will have to do the same this week otherwise they may be hard pressed to keep up.

6. Connecticut Huskies @ North Carolina Tar Heels - What a great basketball game this one would make now wouldn’t it? It makes a pretty good football game as well, if you have been watching these 2 programs play this year you may have noticed that these teams are as resilient as any team out there. Both teams will enter this game without their starting quarterback, The Huskies lost Tyler Lorenzen last week, but still managed to comeback and win that game. The Tar Heels also played without their starting quarterback and made an unpredictable comeback against the Miami Hurricanes on the road. I would not be surprised if UNC hands the Huskies their first loss of the season.
