For all of you Hockey Night in Canada fans out there who have waited for the opportunity to hear Don Cherry and Ron MacLean rap, this may be just about as close as you will ever get to that seemingly unlikely moment.

Here is a look at DJ Steve Porter’s latest creation.  “We’re ready to go!”

Riding in on a coast guard boat from the Detroit River, Don Cherry could be seen from a mile away in the bright, flamboyant suit, something he is well known for these days.  The Dos Equis imitation continued as he made his way towards the arena for game 2 between the Detroit Red wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he even had to stop a few times to take care of his female fans.

He can be a stubborn, stuck-up, cocky individual at times, but Don Cherry sure does have a strong following.  That is evident in this clip.  Not only do the fans wait as he comes in on the boat, but many continue to follow him, like some sort of messiah.  At the conclusion of all the build up, it is time for Don to make his final comment:

“I don’t often make picks, but when I do pick, I pick Detroit.  Stay thirsty my friends.”

Well Don, you were right.  Got any picks for tonight’s game for us?

During his post-game segment, the high-tempered and often controversial Don Cherry did not like what he was seeing from the Vancouver Canucks in their loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.  It seems he was upset because Canuck forwards continued to “run out” to the point men, causing the Blackhawks to score a couple of times.  This must really be something he feels strongly about as he was so wound up that he couldn’t control his language and dropped the ever elusive “F” Bomb.

Don and Ron MacLean continued on through the rest of the show as if nothing had happened.  Its just too bad MacLean didn’t have one of his famous puns waiting for Cherry after that slip up.

Cherry went off last night because he was sticking up for Sidney Crosby.

“What I try to do is teach the kids the Canadian way!!”

“We don’t want to start acting like those goofy soccer guys”

“Watch the way these guys act, ya maybe its better we show these goofs the way they act”

“Crosby’s down so that’s why I’m sticking up for him”

“Now watch Ovechkin, doesn’t he remind you of a soccer player, and that’s what Crosby is talking about.  kids act like Joe Thornton, act like Sakic, Bobby Orr, Yzerman, guys like that.

Don Cherry also predicted last night with Ron Maclean as his witness that someone is gonna get Alexander Ovechkin (A nice way for Don Cherry to say beat or knock him out) for over celebrating after he scores.

“I am predicting someone is gonna get him and somebody is gonna get him good!!!!”

“Some big defenseman is gonna cut him in half as he cuts down center ice.  You don’t act like this goof, this is goofy stuff and the same guys that think this is entertainment, last year thought Avery was entertainment.”

“Its the same junk and you Canadian kids don’t act like it”

We think Don Cherry may have overreacted just a little bit.  I personally enjoy watching Alex Ovechkin’s celebrations after he scores, he treats every goal he scores as if he just won the Stanley Cup.   The flamboyant Don Cherry has always been known for his antics, so as a Canadian this comes expected every Saturday Night on Coaches Corner.
