This 22 year old German tennis player named Sarah Gronert was unfortunately born with both male and female genitalia, a disorder called Hermaphrodite.  Gronert’s male genitalia were removed almost 3 years ago and is currently competing in the WTA.

A hermaphrodite is an organism having both male and female reproductive organs.  In many species, hermaphroditism is a common part of the life-cycle, enabling a form of sexual reproduction in which partners are not separated into distinct male and female types of individual. Hermaphroditism most commonly occurs in invertebrates, although it is also found in some fish, and to a lesser degree in other vertebrates. [Wikipedia]

After further gender verification tests, the sports governing body and the Tennis Association have ruled that Sarah Gronert can compete against the world’s best woman tennis players.  Gronert is no Simona Halep who is ranked 317th in the world, she comes in a few spots behind at 555th in the world.

Schlomo Tzoref coach of Julia Glushko thinks that Gronert has an advantage over the other women,

There is no girl who can hit serves like that, not even Venus Williams. When I heard her story, I was in shock.
