That was the case Sunday afternoon when Deportivo La Coruna took on Athletic Bilbao in Spanish League action. With the two teams tied at 0-0, Deportivo defender Filipe raced down the left wing, setting up a good scoring chance for his club. A few passes later and he would find himself on the finishing end of the games first goal. Unfortunately it came at a rather high price; his right ankle.

As he went to volley in a high headed cross with his left foot, the Athletic Bilbao keeper got under him, forcing Filipe to roll over his right foot, snapping it in a rather gruesome manner.

With the dangers of people consistently sliding at one’s ankles and feet all game, such unpleasant sights are nothing new to the game of football. But unlike Oupa Ngubule and Marcin Wasilewski, who had previously suffered similar agony, Filipe was able to cheer about something when it was all said and done. The sad part is he will likely be doing so from a hospital bed.

Burger King is the new sponsor of Getafe for the upcoming season and that means the popular BK symbol will be plastered on the front of the team’s jerseys, but wait. That is not all. The home of the Whopper added a little something else to the fun.

As if soccer celebrations were not interesting enough already, Burger King has spiced things up for the Getafe players and fans. On the inside of the jersey, a picture of the King’s face was placed for goal celebrations. What better way to express you excitement after a goal against Barcelona than by running around sporting a lazy-eyed Burger King face over your own. It’s almost as good as porn star Natalia Zeta‘s celebration, which involves no shirt at all.

And just in case they aren’t sure how to use it properly, each kit comes with instructions on how to properly celebrate a goal with the King. Something tells me Ronald McDonald soccer shoes are right around the corner.

ESPN has reported that Manchester United has accepted a $131.6 million bid (£80 million) from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo, and we assume he is taking Luana Belletti with him. This deal trumps the previous Kaka deal, setting a new transfer record and also raising Real’s total spending on the two transfers to an astounding $228 million. That is an unbelievable amount of money, even for one of the world’s richest sporting clubs.

The move, although straining to the wallet, should pay dividends on the field where Real Madrid will now have two of the worlds most talented players initiating their offensive attack. So what would lead Manchester United to give up their prized possession? A statement on their website had the following to say:

”Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

”At Cristiano’s request – who has again expressed his desire to leave – and after discussion with the player’s representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

”Matters are expected to be concluded by June 30. The club will not comment until further notice.”

Although it was stated in December by Sir Alex Ferguson that he would not “sell that mob a virus” (referring to Real Madrid), he has clearly gone back on his word. Money will do that, but what does this mean for Manchester United now? Some believe that they may take a look at Bayern Munich’s Frank Ribery, but his cost is said to be a little high. Another possibility is Wigan’s Antonio Valencia. One thing is for sure. The club will now have plenty of money to spend, but filling the void left by Ronaldo will not be an easy task.

Unhappy with being second best to Barcelona in Spain, Real is looking to improve an already talent-loaded team, and they may not be done just yet. Reports had indicated that they were interested in Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Should they land him, it will surely mean the rising dominance of Spanish clubs in European football. England has held the reigns for the past couple of years, making their mark on the Champions League, but with Barcelona’s victory in 2009, and now the free spending of Real Madrid, Spain may be the new center of the soccer universe. Oh, and lets not forget their Euro 2008 championship.

Manchester United will surely have something to say about Ronaldo leaving, but if things go well for Real, 2010 may be the year of Spain, and with the World Cup set for South Africa next year, Spaniards will hope for just that. Another celebration (this time minus Messi) is exactly what they are looking for. Just make sure the parade busses can handle the load.

After making a save, Rayo Vallecano keeper David Cobeno kicked the ball out of his zone, where it would bounce in front of an out of position opposing keeper, and into the net. The goal was something to celebrate, but apparently he was his teams only offensive threat of the night in their Spanish B League match against Elche.

Once being labeled the star of the match, the light on Cobeno quickly dimmed as his team was defeated by a score of 2-1. How can a team allow such a lucky goal go to waste? I guess sometimes not even all the luck in the world is enough. On Sunday, that was the case for Rayo Vallecano.
