Week one is always the most difficult as it is hard to predict who this year’s top teams are and who will faulter. Here is who we like going into the opening weekend.

Game: Washington Redskins @ New York Giants

Pick: Washington Redskins +6 1/2

Reason: The Giants come into the 2009 season with several question marks at wide receiver. If they can not find an answer to that problem right away, it could spell trouble. After losing Plaxico Burress last season, teams were able to focus on the Giants rushing attack and New York went on to lose four of its last five games (including a 23-11 loss to Philadelphia in the playoffs). The Redskins made some big changes on defense, including the addition of Albert Haynseworth and first round pick Brian Orakpo. Expect them to defend well against the run and force Eli Manning to pass more often than he would like. We expect this to be a close game and the Skins should be able to do enough to cover the 6 1/2 point spread.

Game: Minnesota Vikings @ Cleveland Browns

Pick: Minnesota Vikings -4

Reason: The Vikings were fortunate enough to have the Williamses avaliable along their defensive line for this game. That will surely translate into an absent Browns running game as they already have little to offer in a backfield led by Jamal Lewis. With the ground game shut down, Brady Quinn will be forced to throw the ball and that is likely the last thing Cleveland wants for their second year started. With that being said, Adrian Peterson and the Vikings offense should be able to produce against a Browns defense that ranked 28th against the run, and 26th overall last season.

Game: Buffalo Bills @ New England Patriots

Pick: New England Patriots -10 1/2

Reason: First we will look back to two season ago when Tom Brady absolutely torched the Bill in both their regular season meetings. His final numbers over the two games was 684 total yards through the air and nine touchdowns. Brady is back and should be set to go for much anticipated Monday night opener at Gillette Stadium. Expect Brady to come out firing and coach Bill Belichick to take advantage of a Bills offense that has been largely unproductive this preseason.

Game: New York Jets @ Houston Texans

Pick: Houston Texans -4 1/2

Reason: This is expected to be the year that the Houston Texans finally break out. If they are going to take that next step they will have to start against a tough Jets defense. Fortunately for them, New York will be without two of their top defenders in Shaun Ellis and Calvin Pace. That should mean more room for the likes of Steve Slaton, Matt Schaub, and Andre Johnson. Houston’s defense should also be much improved as their crop of young stars has gained another valuable year of experience. If this is in fact the year of the Texans, they will want to send that message right away.
