Now that Super Bowl XLVI is set and the 2011 NFL Season is about to be wrapped up, it’s time to begin pouring over stats, crunching numbers, and making predictions. But rather than use all the usual stats and records to come up with a prediction, I thought it might be fun to take a different approach. So instead of QB ratings and turnovers, I’m going to analyze the hotness of the Giants’ and Patriots’ wives and girlfriends. This analysis, I believe, will prove which team has more to lose by choking in the Super Bowl and becoming a national laughing stock. And the team with more to lose (i.e. with hotter WAGs) should be the team who tries harder and, therefore, comes out on top.

I think it’s a pretty sound theory. So here it goes. I hope you can keep up with this cutting edge analysis.

Welker was seemingly playing yesterday’s game in beast mode, catching an incredible 16 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. That includes an opening drive that saw the Pats’ top wideout catch four balls for 67 yards and a touchdown. However, Welker’s career day wasn’t enough, as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson put together some spectacular games of their own, leading the Bills back from 21-points down, en route to the three-point victory.

Both Darren McFadden of the Oakland Raiders (171 RuYds, 2 TDs) and Torrey Smith of the Baltimore Ravens (5 Rec 152 Yds, 3 TDs) had impressive performances in winning causes yesterday afternoon, but it was Welker who earns our “Stat Line of the Night” for September 25, 2011, albeit, in a losing cause.

Not many teams would have the guts to line up with no running backs in the backfield on first-and-ten from their own one-yard line. Then again, not many teams have Tom Brady as their quarterback.

While the play before (a Patriots goal line stand on 4th-and-goal from inside their own one-yard line) may have had a greater effect on the final outcome of this game, Tom Brady’s 99-yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker may have had more fantasy football implications than any other play in fantasy football history. Quarterback-wide receiver combos have become coveted commodities in the fantasy world, and as a result, many owners who had taken Brady in any of the first three rounds of their respective drafts likely went after Welker in the fourth, fifth of sixth round. And those who did were rewarded with a play that earned most owners in standard leagues approximately 26 total fantasy points.

I have already talked about how these two players led my team from 69 points down to a most improbably fantasy victory. Here is a breakdown of the points earned on this single play:

Welker: 99 yards = 9.9 points; Touchdown = 6 points

Brady: 99 yards = 3.96 points; Touchdown = 6 points

Total: 9.9 + 6 + 3.96 + 6 = 25.86 points

Here is another look at the play that had some fantasy owners jumping out of their seats in joy, and others drowning in a pool of their own tears.

After enduring an embarrassing 45-3 defeat at the hands of the Patriots back in week 13, the Jets exacted some revenge on their division rivals by eliminating them from the playoffs following a 28-21 victory on Sunday. It was an inspired effort by Rex Ryan’s team, who simply couldn’t stop themselves from “flipping out” after the final whistle blew.

Here are some of the celebratory acrobatics put on display by Jets’ wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

And the win wasn’t the only source of vengeance being dished out by the Jets’ players on Sunday.

They were also able to send a message to Wes Welker, who had taken some cheap shots at Rex Ryan during a press conference earlier in the week. Welker was benched by coach Bill Belichick during the Patriots’ opening possession after making several foot references while speaking to the media on Thursday, and when the Pats’ wideout was inserted back into the game, he received some more punishment via this helmet jarring collision with Jets’ safety Eric Smith, which sent a piece of Welker’s helmet flying through the air.

Both teams came into this battle talking the talk, but only the Jets would leave Gillette Stadium walking the walk.

After watching Wes Welker make 10 foot references in a single press conference yesterday, the only thing that left me surprised was the fact that I couldn’t hear any laughter coming from those in attendance. I mean, you can’t tell me that this wasn’t a planned attack by the Patriots’ wide receiver to poke fun at Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan and his highly-publicized foot fetish. I rarely ever hear anyone use the saying “best foot forward” anymore, let alone three times within a single 10 minute press conference. And do you really believe Welker thinks three guys all have “great feet”?

So where was the sense of humor from the men and women behind the microphones? Maybe it just sounds a lot funnier when you edit the entire press conference into a 30 second foot-reference highlight package.

Yesterday was not a good day to be a kicker in the NFL as two of them (the Pats’ Stephen Gostkowski and the Lions’ Jason Hanson) were forced to leave their respective games with injuries. Yes, that would be two more than the usual zero we see sustain any sort of injury on a weekly basis. So without their starting place kickers available, the Patriots and Lions had to resort to the legs of Wes Welker and Ndamukong Suh, and while the former was successful in his extra point attempt, the latter was only inches wide, ringing the ball off the goal post.

If you had asked me which player I would expect to step in for the Patriots to kick, Welker would be a likely choice. However, I would love to find out what the Lions’ thought process was behind their decision to allow Suh to kick that PAT attempt. After all, the guy is a 6’4, 307 pound defensive tackle. Kicking probably isn’t his forte. Perhaps the punter may have been a better choice here?

Here is a look at Suh’s miss.

Wes Welker was flagged on the play and will probably be getting fined by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. This is not the first time a Patriots player was flagged and fined for extensive celebration in the end zone this season. A couple of weeks ago it was Ben Watson showed his love for his pregnant wife after putting the football under his jersey in a baby-on-the-way celebration. He was handed down with a $10,000 fine, We Welker could expect the same for his snow angel celebration.

We don’t understand how such a rule could be ever implemented in the NFL and players fined $10,000 for just having some fun. In a way they are just making the game a little more exciting and marketable to the world. Roger Goodell should loosen up a bit and allow celebrations after a touchdown.

Just look at the CFL and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, their celebrations are some of the best in the league. Some days well just watch the Blue Bombers just for their end zone celebrations. The NFL should follow suit and allow end zone celebrations only fining players who are offensive.
