But one look at these entrants, and you’ll see there was no shortage of professional sports disappointment. And we’re not even counting the NBA owners and players. What can we say? We love a challenge.

Total Pro Sports – With the Detroit Lions finishing off their perfect 0-16 losing season yesterday, it’s only fitting we generate a list of The Worst Sports Teams In History. We did not include the Detroit Lions to our list of worst teams, but if we did we all know they will be in the top 5. We’ll give them a break and add them next year to the list.

From Baseball, Football, Hockey and Basketball these are the top 10 worst sports teams in history.

10 – 1981 Northwestern Wildcats Football

The years between 1978-1982 are 14 years that the Northwestern Wildcats Football fans will always want to forget. The Wildcats set Division I-A record in that time losing 34 consecutive games. In that 34 game losing streak Northwestern was outscored 505-82 an average of 2.2 points scored per game.

9 – 1988 Baltimore Orioles

In 1988 the Baltimore Orioles lost their first 21 games from April 4th to April 28th. That year the Orioles finished 7th in the East only winning 54 games and losing 107. This losing month of April set records in the Majors for the wrong reason. One of the records set was the worst losing month ever by a MLB team.

8 – 1992 Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks were outscored by an average of 15 points per game. They almost set 2 records that year, falling one game short of a 20 game losing streak and managing 2 more wins then the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers. If rookie Jim Jackson did not hold out and return the last 25 games of the season, who knows what could have been for the Mavs?

7 – 2001 Carolina Panthers

The Panthers started the season on fire winning their first game and then everything changed for the worse. They proceeded to lose their next 15 in a row, ending the season with a 1-15 record. The Panthers were one of the worst teams in NFL history allowing 25.6 points per game. The only bright side for the Panthers that year is that they did not need to fight to get their first win.

6 – 2003 Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers fans can now raise their heads and be thankful they wont be known for having the worst team in the city of Detroit. The Lions took that away from them this past Sunday. This Tigers team was a bad one, they had a 20 game loser in Mike Maroth and a bottom Triple Crown winner in Ramon Santiago. The Tigers finished off the season with a 43-119 record second worst in MLB history to the 1962 New York Mets.

5 – 1990 New England Patriots

If you don’t remember the Patriots of the early 90′s you would never have known they were the laughing stock of the of the NFL. The 1990 New England Patriots were a bad team. Some said they were worse then the 1976 Tampa Bay Bucs team. The Patriots that year had the NFL’s worst offense and the second worst defense finishing the year with a 1-15 record.

4 – 1974 Washington Capitals

Our first hockey team makes the list at #4. The Washington Capitals were an expansion team so not much was expected from them. The Caps that year went through 3 head coaches almost totaling more wins (8). The Capitals set numerous records that season for the wrong reason; 39 road losses, 37 consecutive road losses and 17 consecutive losses. If you were a gambler chasing your money on the Caps you better of had deep pockets cause you were doubling up big money on them.

3 – 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the first team in the NFL to ever lose all their games in one season finishing off with a 0-14 record. This was the innaguaral season for the Bucs team who had a 24th ranked defense and an offense that ranked dead last. The offense managed to score a measly 8.9 points per game, no wonder why they lost every game.

2 – 1972 Philadelphia 76ers

The 1972 Philadelphia 76ers were a special team for sports history they only managed to win 9 games out of an 82 game schedule. They also had 4 different streaks of losing at least 13 straight games and managed to finish the year 59 spots out first place. That year the 76ers earned the nickname the “Nine and 73-ers”.

1 – 1962 New York Mets

We kept the best for last. The 1962 New York Mets were a “Special” team they officially lost the most games in MLB history totaling 120 and only won 40 games. We labeled this team as “Special” because the first run allowed by the Mets was balked in by pitcher Roger Craig.

We hope you enjoyed out list of top 10 Worst Sports Teams In History.
