2008/09 Edmonton Oilers Season Preview

Edmonton Oilers3. Edmonton Oilers –  A bit of a surprise pick here but they finished off last season on fire and their young players will be that much better after a year of experience.  After some smooth moves, by then GM Kevin Lowe, the Oilers have a very good group up front.

Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff, Ethan Moreau, Dustin Penner, Fernando Pisani and Gilbert Brule will look to make up parts of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines and youngsters Andrew Cogliano and Sam Gagner will also look to improve on their rookie seasons.  Erik Cole will look great along side Hemsky on the 1st line, but injuries have been an issue in the past.

The defence has been improved and shouldn’t be as big of an issue as last season.  Tom Gilbert, Denis Grebeshkov and Ladislav Smid are young defenceman who will look to learn from last year and Steve Staios provides leadership and stability.  Lubomir Visnovsky will help the PP from the point and Sheldon Souray will look to stay healthy and help provide offence from the back end as well.

The Oilers only down fall could be in net. Mathieu Garon will look to continue his solid play from his surprise season last year and Dwayne Roloson provides a veteran leadership role as the backup but isn’t the same goaltender Edmonton traded for two years ago.

Overall the Oilers are a very solid team with a lot of talent. The only big question mark is in net which will make or break this team.
