Jason LaBarbera Traded To Vancouver
Total Pro Sports – The Vancouver Canucks have picked up Jason LaBarbera from the LA Kings as a second or third option to Roberto Luongo. We see no real reason for this acquisition by the Canucks because Curtis Sanford has played solid as a second option while Luongo was hurt.
Jason LaBarbera will most likely take over the backup duties behind Luongo pushing Curtis Sanford to the minors.
The trade makes sense for the Los Angeles Kings as it will free up a tone of space for all their young talented goaltenders. Jonathan Quick and Erik Ersberg will now split time with the Kings as they have both proved themselves this year. This also allows prospect Jonathan Bernier to become the starter with Manchester of the AHL and speeds up the process of him becoming the future starter with the Kings.
Grading The Trade – Los Angeles Kings (B) Vancouver Canucks (B-)
Los Angeles Times – The Kings traded goaltender Jason LaBarbera to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday for a seventh-round pick in the June entry draft, clearing the way for impressive rookie Jonathan Quick to stay with the team and share time with Erik Ersberg.
“We think Quick is at the level where he can be able to do at least the backup role,” General Manager Dean Lombardi said. “We thought this would take a little longer for him, but we think we can accelerate things.”
The move also allows prime prospect Jonathan Bernier to play most of the games for Manchester of the American Hockey League instead of splitting them with Quick. Another prospect, Jeff Zatkoff, will back up Bernier.
