The Stat Line Of The Night – 05/21/09 – Evgeni Malkin

Hurricanes Penguins HockeyTotal Pro Sports –  The Pittsburgh Penguins took full advantage of home ice, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes in game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals 7-4, taking a 2-0 series lead.  Another night at the rink, another offensive outburst for the Penguins, and this time it was Evgeni Malkin’s turn to lead the way.

With his parents once again in attendance, Malkin put on a show, notching the hat-trick and adding an assist to help lead his team to the crucial victory, which helps bring them one step closer to returning to the Stanley Cup Finals where they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings last year.  Malkin was a force last night, not only putting the puck in the net, but fore-checking hard, and playing with the type of intensity that is expected during playoff time.  It is because of such an all-around effort, in addition to his three goals, that is was a no-brainer to make Evgeni Malkin “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Thursday May 21st, 2009.

Sidney Crosby has been on fire all playoffs, and now it appears that Malkin has reached that same level as well.  Since being called out for a lack of production last series against the Washington Capitals, he has taken his game to a whole new level, and now owns the league lead for playoff points this year.  Such production will not only give him such honors, but it may also be the key to their revenge on the Red Wings, should the two teams meet again in the finals.  With both squad leading their respective series 2-0, that seems like a very likely scenario at this point.
