The Stat Line Of The Night – 08/06/09 – Cliff Lee
Total Pro Sports – One day after J.A. Happ reassured Phillies’ management that they made the right move in keeping him at the trade deadline, Cliff Lee took to the mound and showed why their decision to opt for him instead of Blue Jays’ ace Roy Halladay may have been the right one. At a much cheaper price, Philadelphia took last year’s CY Young award winner and he opened his career as a member of the Phillies with a victory.
Taking on a tough Colorado Rockies team, Lee made sure that his first impression was a good one, going seven innings and handing the bullpen a 3-1 lead that would end up standing as the final. Over his seven innings of work, he would allow only six hits and one earned run, striking out nine batters. That was enough to earn himself “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Thursday, August 6th, 2009.
Sporting a rotation that includes Joe Blanton, Cole Hamels, and Jamie Moyer, along with Happ and Lee, the Phillies are set to make another run at the World Series. Sitting seven games up on Florida in the NL East, the playoffs are easily within their reach. Should they go into October swinging some hot bats, it could be trouble for any team who tries to get in their way.
