The Stat Line Of The Night – 08/10/09 -Troy Tulowitzki
Total Pro Sports – This year may just go down as the year of the cycle. Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies joined a staggering total of 6 players hitting for the cycle this year. The list consists of(in order), Orlando Hudson, Ian Kinsler, Jason Kubel, Michael Cuddyer and Melky Cabrera.
To add to already impressive feat, Tulowitzki is only the 2nd player in MajorLeauge history to have a cycle and an unassisted double play, the other being John Valentin of the Red Sox. Cycle’s are a very rare occurrence, with only 287 cycles hit since the year 1882. That averages out to 2.25 cycles per year. Even more rare is the unassisted triple play, which has only been pulled off a miniscule 12 times in league history. A little bit of controversy has stemmed from the triple Troy Tulowitzki hit because the outfielder clearly bobbled the ball. But the umpires ruled it a triple so the ruling should stand.
The resurgence of the Rockies this year can be attributed to the fine play of Tulowitzi, with the Rockies going a stunning 42-18 since firing there manager on June 3rd. Tulowitzki’s line for the night reads, 5-5 (2 singles, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 home run) with 7 RBI’s, and now leads the team with 21 home runs.
Don’t look now but the Rockies are a good young team with tons of big game experience from there run a few years ago. I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if the slipped into that wild card spot and shocked the world by beating the mighty Dodgers.
