The Stat Line Of The Night – 08/18/09 – Joe Mauer

57208977OG_D036707022Total Pro Sports – The Minnesota Twins are not completely out of playoff contention, sitting only 6.5 games back in the American League Central, but last night they were also playing the role of spoiler against the wild card leading Texas Rangers.  Setting the tone was all-star catcher Joe Mauer as the Rangers’ pitching could not find an answer for his bat.

The Rangers went into last night’s game one up on the Red Sox for the AL wild card but were unable to maintain that lead after a 9-6 loss at the hands of the Twins.  Much of that was the result of Mauer’s power hitting as he went yard twice and recorded another single on route to a 3 for 5 night which produced three RBIs.  That was enough to earn him “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Tuesday, August 18th, 2009.

Joe Mauer’s season thus far has been nothing short of remarkable.  With just over a month left to play he continues to flirt with a .400 batting average, currently sitting at .383.  He has also tallied 25 home runs and 77 RBIs, and although he is not in the running for a triple crown, numbers like these are surely enough to get him a fair share of support in American League MVP voting at the end of the year.
