Caster Semenya Wins Women’s 800m At Worlds, But Is “She” A “He”?
Total Pro Sports – Winning a 800 meter race at the World Championships by an astounding 2.45 seconds will often earn you a gold medal and the respect of you competitors. For Caster Semenya, it has earned her a trip to the lab for a gender verification test.
The IAAF has asked the South African athletics federation to conduct this test because of concerns that she does not meet the requirements to compete as a woman. I’d be interested to see just what those requirements are, because at first glance it doesn’t appear as though there is any evidence of “manliness” beneath her track uniform.
The test was requested about three weeks ago after Semenya made her mark in the track and field world by drastically dropping her personal best marks in the 800m and 1500m. I guess if it isn’t steroids, then there must be some other explanation.
Just don’t expect Usain Bolt to be making any appearances on the women’s circuit anytime soon.
Here is a clip of the race.
