The Stat Line Of The Night – 08/25/09 – Adam Wainwright
Total Pro Sports – The Astros’ Wandy Rodriguez pitched a solid game, allowing a single run in the first inning before shutting out the Cardinals over the next six. Unfortunately, that was not enough for him to get the victory as the Cards’ Adam Wainwright was in the zone and that was bad news for Houston’s batters all night.
Wainwright’s performance allowed him to record a Major League tying 15th win of the season as he pitched eight innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits while striking out five. It was just the type of performance his team needed as they could only give him the support of one run, but that was all he needed, leading them to a 1-0 victory and earning himself “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Tuesday, August 25th, 2009.
When discussing the top pitching duos in the National League, many may point to Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, or J.A. Happ and Cliff Lee, but Wainwright and Chris Carpenter have the numbers to propell them to the top of that list. Both find themselves with a ERA that lands them in the league’s top five and they have also combined for 29 wins, more than any other duo in the majors. With this solid one-two punch and some consistent hitting, it could once again be the Cards year to take the World Series trophy back to St. Louis.
