The Stat Line Of The Night – 08/30/09 – Zack Greinke
Total Pro Sports – After hitting a bit of a bump midway through the season, many have seemed to forget about the remarkable numbers that Kansas City pitcher Zack Greinke has been putting up thus far in the 2009 MLB season. Yesterday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners, he reminded us why his name should be a part of AL Cy Young discussions.
Seattle has been desperately looking for wins in order to close the gap in the wild card race, but Greinke was not about to give them one. Instead, he had opposing batter looking lost at the plate as they could only manage a single hit off him throughout the entire nine innings. Greinke would go on to pitch a complete game shutout, striking out five batters in the process. He was one hit away from the Major’s second no-hitter of the season, but that was still enough to earn him “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Sunday, August 30th, 2009.
It is a shame that Greinke’s solid effort over the entire season has been somewhat overshadowed because of the fact that he plays for the lowly Kansas City Royals. His stat line continue to be among the best in the AL, sitting tied for 5th in wins (13), second in strikeouts (202) and first in ERA (2.32). A strong finish to the end of the season may put him in contention for the triple crown, and will surely have people checking his name off on Cy Young ballots.
