The Stat Line Of The Night – 09/02/09 – Ted Lilly
Total Pro Sports – Sitting only six games out of the NL wild card position, wins have become increasingly important for the Chicago Cubs these days. Last night was no different and Ted Lilly was on the mound to make sure they would get exactly what they needed against the Houston Astros.
It was a solid performance by Lilly in a game that afforded him little room for error. While the Astros pitching staff only allowed two runs, he was able to better that with eight innings of shutout ball. During that span he also recorded five strikeouts while allowing only four hits. It was the type of outing needed by the Cubs as they came away with the 2-0 victory and Lilly would go on to earn himself “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009.
As each game passes, wins becomes that much more important for a Chicago Cubs club that came into the 2009 campaign with high expectations. An absence from the playoffs would undoubtedly be a major disappointment and that is where they currently find themselves. With only a month left in the regular season, they will need several more games like this if they expect to change that.
