The Stat Line Of The Night – 09/13/09 – Drew Brees
Total Pro Sports – Most knew that the New Orleans Saints had a deadly passing attack, but in case anyone had forgotten over the long off-season, Drew Brees was more than happy to remind them Sunday afternoon at home against the Detroit Lions. Having gone winless last season, it was no secret that the Lions were not a strong defensive team, but Brees showed no mercy, and that was apparent in his final stat line.
Leading the Saints’ airshow, which was in flight all day, the Pro Bowl quarterback went 26 for 34 for 358 yards, and connected for a club record six touchdowns, tying the mark set by Billy Kilmer in 1969. Although the Lions showed resilience all day, continuously coming back with their own scores, their defense had no answer for Brees as he led his Saints to the 45-27 victory, and earned himself “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Sunday, September 13th, 2009.
Brees not only showed that he can get the job done, but it was also evident he could do so with just about anybody. His distribution of the ball should also be noted, as eight different players recorded a reception and five had a touchdown (Jeremy Shockey scored two). Unfortunately for Drew, he will not get to see the Lions every week, but with a start like this we just might see him make a run for Tom Brady‘s record 50 touchdown passes in a single season. Now we will have to wait until tomorrow night to see what type of reply Tom has.
