Antero Niittymaki Makes An Amazing Goal Line Save (Video)
Times have been rough as of late for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Currently sitting in 10th place in the Eastern conference, the team is a shadow of it’s former self that won a Stanley Cup. But with the emergence of Steven Stamkos as a legitimate superstar, along with Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis, the future looks bright for the Lightning.
On December 13th against the red hot Blackhawks, Antero Niittymaki made what is arguably the save of the year. Albeit in a game that the Lightning lost 4-0. We’ve seen a few amazing goal line saves this year, like Lars Volden from Norway who made a last effort save as the puck was on the goal line. This one might be even better.
Off a quick snap shot by Kris Versteeg that seemed destined to find the back of the net as it trickled through Antero Niittymaki’s legs, the Fin quickly spun around and batted the puck off the goal line with his paddle. This might be as close as anyone can get to putting the puck in the net without succeding.
Although the circumstances of the save may not be as spectacular, we can be sure that it will be in the plays of the year. Looks like goalies are getting on the highlight reels for what they are paid to do, stop the puck, not get whacked in the face by his own teammate.
