The Stat Line of the Night – 1/5/10 – Ricky Stanzi
The Orange Bowl took place last night between the Hawkeyes of Iowa and the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. The temperatures were an unseasonable 49 degrees in Miami for the game. They weren’t the only thing that was cold, however. Ricky Stanzi, the Iowa quarterback, had not played in a few games due to an ankle injury he suffered against Northwestern which required surgery.
Cold or not, Stanzi came to play on the biggest stage Iowa has won on in decades. While the Iowa defense was obviously the thing that had gotten them to that point, Stanzi did a good job of getting the ball in the endzone and leading the offense in the win. Stanzi, who is 18-4 in 2 years with 2 bowl wins to his name, went 17/29 for 231 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The first quarter told the story of his night, when he threw both touchdowns and an interception returned for a touchdown. Stanzi has been a winner his whole career and even his mistake was made at a point that it wouldn’t lose the game for the Hawkeyes.
Stanzi is not a spectacular quarterback, nor will he likely make it to the NFL. On this night, however, his performance was good enough to earn him “The Stat Line of the Night”.
