Soccer Player Fractures Skull in Horrific Collision (Video)
Soccer is no sport for the faint of heart, no matter how much Americans protest that it is. The sport includes peeing on the field and incredible long-range goals. This horrific incident from a match between Inter Milan and Chievo proves it beyond a doubt. Setting the safety issues aside for one second, this hit is the most brutal I’ve seen in a long time in any sport.
Inter Milan defender Christian Chivu and Chievo’s Sergio Pellissier went up for a ball in the air and both tried to head it. Unfortunately their heads crashed into each other. This wasn’t just a tap either, if you watch the tape you can see that the head collision came at full speed. Christian Chivu was taken off the field on a stretcher and later rushed to the hospital. He will require an operation for a fractured skull that will have him out of soccer for a while. As far as Pellissier goes, it is unclear at this time the extent of his injury, but I would have to imagine he has one hell of a headache.
I’m not going to say the players should wear helmets, but somehow safety measures should be taken to try to prevent this kind of thing from happening. On the other hand, soccer is a rough and tumble sport. In American football if this happens you would hear screaming about the safety problems and how they need more pads and thicker helmets. In soccer its just considered part of the game.
