Jose Offerman Offers Umpire a Punch (Video)
We’ve seen players and coaches spat with umpires for many, many years. As a die-hard baseball fan, there are times I want to kick some dirt on an umpire’s pants myself. But I don’t think I’ve ever felt the urge to go the Roberto Alomar route and hawk a loogie in their face, stab one like those fans in Chicago, or throw a bat at an ump like Delmon Young did a few years ago.
Jose Offerman, however, probably has those other feelings.
Offerman, who is the manager of the Licey Tigers in the Dominican Winter League, is known for his short temper and he let it get the best of him the other day when he found himself in a heated argument with an umpire of the Tigers game with the Cibao Giants.
Offerman came onto the field to defend one of his players, Ronny Paulino, who had just been ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The discussion turned into a full blown argument, presumably when the umpire said Offerman’s breath stunk. Offerman then gave the umpire a quick WWF jab to the face and the umpire followed suit with a dive to the ground.
The umpire’s dive probably deserved another punch, but the initial swing from Offerman is problematic for a couple reasons. First of all, it’s wrong. Secondly, it’s not the first time he’s lost control. Just a couple years ago he charged the mound in a Minor League game, swinging his bat like a mad man at the pitcher.
