Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis Nyquil Ad is, um, Depressing
I’m not quite sure what to make of the following Nyquil advertisement. The medicine is supposed to help with a cold and give you a better night’s rest “for a better [looking] tomorrow.” However, they’ve depicted U.S. snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis as if she has just overdosed on the medicine (like a few celebrities have in recent years) or like she’s having an orgasm in sub-zero temperatures.
I guess this is what the exact opposite of sexualizing women looks like. Ms. Jacobellis looks horrendous and the ad is there to suggest to us that we can all look better than a star Olympic athlete with a little Nyquil in our lives. If that’s the case, I’m going to head to the store right now and pick some up to test out.
I really don’t think that was Nyquil’s intentions, though, and given the seriousness of celebrities overdosing on sleep medications and the recent death of an Olympic luger, maybe it wasn’t the greatest idea to make Ms. Jacobellis look like she was just discovered in an avalanche of snow, weeks after being buried in order to sell the medication.
Nyquil is Nyquil and if people need it, they are going to buy it, but this ad would definitely make me furrow and eyebrow or two as I went to pick up a box at the store.
