The Stat Line of the Night – 2/28/10 – Team Canada Hockey
As a Blackhawks fan, my initial feeling was to give this honor to Jonathan Toews. That first goal was perfectly hit and he has done everything in this tournament besides scoring a goal of his own. Then I thought, wait a minute, Sidney Crosby scored THE goal in overtime to win a gold medal in what some are calling one of the greatest hockey games ever played. This was too tough a call for me, so I asked my editor and he had the greatest idea of all: Team Canada.
It was a team effort that allowed the Canadians to overcome a feisty American squad that played much more physical and tough than anyone could have expected. With all the pressure weighing down on the Canadians to win on their home ice, they had choked last week in a preliminary game. But last night, with the whole world watching, Sid the Kid did something that will go down in the books as one of the greatest moments in Canadian hockey history. 7 minutes and 40 seconds into overtime, Crosby wristed a shot past Ryan Miller for the win. Miller had looked almost invincible for most of the tournament, but showed some flaws in this game.
Canadians everywhere should rejoice after avenging a rough 2006 Olympics. Congratulations to all you Canucks. Hockey truly is Canada’s sport, and the Canadian National Team gets “The Stat Line of the Night”.
