Jim Joyce In Tears As He Recieves Lineup Card From Armando Galarraga (Video)
By now you have all heard about the perfect game that should have been for Tigers’ pitcher Armando Galarraga, but wasn’t because of a blown call on the part of umpire Jim Joyce. With the Indians and Tigers set to play a day game today at Comerica Park, Joyce was scheduled to work behind the plate. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig gave Joyce the option to sit this one out, but the 24-year vet declined.
Instead, he walked out with his fellow umpires, and during an emotional moment that brought tears to his eyes, received the lineup card from Galarraga at home plate prior to the game.
Many individuals would have taken the day off in order to avoid the boos and jeers from fans, but not Joyce. Much like last night, when he apologized to Galarraga and admitted his error, he once again stood up and ‘took it like a man.’
After discussing the matter today, Bud Selig and the MLB have decided not to overturn the call and reward Galarraga with the perfect game. Instead, the league will sit down over the next couple of days and discuss whether they should expand instant replay and umpiring.
Both Joyce and Galarraga have shown a tremendous amount of class throughout this entire episode. Why can’t Selig do the same and give Armando what we all know he deserves? After all, by doing so, who is he hurting? It is a tough call, but the pros seem to outweigh the cons.
What do you think? Should this call be overturned?
