The Stat Line of the Night – 6/2/10 – Armando Galarraga

armando galarragaArmando Galarraga was just one out away from securing his place in history, one out away from the 21st perfect game in major league baseball. A ground ball was hit to the right side between 1st and 2nd base. It was cleanly fielded by Miguel Cabrera. Galarraga raced to cover first base and received the throw. He planted his foot on the bag and the runner was called…safe. Replays showed it wasn’t even close. The ball and Galarraga’s foot beat the runner by a full stride. Umpire Jim Joyce totally blew the call.

As terrible as that was, let’s go over how dominant Galarraga was against the Indians on Wednesday night. He struck out 3 and didn’t walk any. He only needed 88 pitches for the complete game, shutout victory. He threw first-pitch strikes to 24 of the 28 batters he faced. He helped the Tigers break a losing streak. He was perfect on the night, even if the umpire wasn’t.

Armando Galarraga has The Stat Line of the Night for 6/2/10.
