Player Chokes Ref During Chilean Soccer Game

chilean player chokes refRefereeing may be one of the most thankless jobs ever.  When you call a good game, gratitude comes in the form of silence, but one bad call could have players chasing you around the field, or even strangling you, as is the case in the Chilean Premera B Division.

The player dishing out the punishment was Jose Pedroso, a Paraguayan footballer who has since retired from the game and made this statement following the incident:

“I’m not sorry… I understand that I will be punished and I will no longer play for Rangers or any other team. I intend to get away from football, I’d rather be at peace with my family in Paraguay.” [Caught Offside]

It may be fair to say that Pedroso over-reacted a bit, but perhaps any referee who orders a penalty kick to be retaken four times (as Mr. Miranda had done during this game) deserves to be put in a rear-naked choke.
