The Stat Line of the Night – 7/27/10 – Cliff Lee
The Texas Rangers look like they can make the playoffs and be a contender in the American League for the first time in many years, and an active front office went out and acquired Cliff Lee to try to help make that happen. Unfortunately, Lee has not gotten the run support he expected from the Rangers lineup since coming over. So he decided to take the game into his own hands pitching a 9 inning gem last night, but it still almost wasn’t enough against the Oakland Athletics.
Lee was dominant for 9 innings but still got the no-decision. Thanks to Nelson Cruz’s 10th inning 2-run bomb, the Rangers were able to pull out a victory, although it’s a shame Lee could not get the win. He pitched 9 innings and only gave up 5 hits and didn’t walk a single batter. He also had 13 strikeouts. The key to the game was his ability to get ahead in the count so frequently, throwing 27 of 32 first pitches for strikes.
The Rangers have had a great offense all season and the only real question mark has been there pitching. With Cliff Lee in the fold they may be poised to finally make the playoffs and even put together a run. For now, Lee gets “The Stat Line of the Night”.
