The Stat Line of the Night — 8/17/10 — Jim Thome

jim thomeWhat may have looked like a normal divisional series between the White Sox and Twins before the season started has become the series to save the White Sox season, or destroy it.  When the Twins came to town on Tuesday, they were holding a 2 game lead over the Sox in the AL Central.  After smoking them on Tuesday and Jim Thome’s heroics last night, the lead has stretched to 4 games.  The Twins have surprised everyone this season and Jim Thome has been a large part of their swagger.

The White Sox were down 5-4 and staring another defeat in the face in the 9th when Alexei Ramirez hit a rocket to left field over the fence to tie it up and send the game into extras.  The Twins would waste no time, and their left veteran made his at-bat count.  With Delmon Young on base Thome hit a 420 foot bomb to right field to win in walk-off fashion.  On the night Thome was 3-5 with 3 RBIs, a run, and of course his heroic homerun.

The AL Central is one of the most exciting divisional races out there, but it looks like the Twins are putting some distance between themselves and the White Sox.  They are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now and if they can ride the hot bats of Jim Thome and other players, they will be looking at October baseball.  For now, Mr. Thome gets “The Stat Line of the Night”.
