The Stat Line of the Night – 8/22/10 – Jason Heyward
Yesterday marked the end of an era in baseb, all, as long-time manager Lou Piniella managed his last game in baseball. He had announced that he would retire after the season, but in the days leading up to Sunday’s game he decided to call it quits sooner. He was a great manager for many years, but now he will be passing the torch in Chicago. Fittingly, as the old move out, the new were on display in full force. Jason Heyward, the Braves rookie phenom, put on a show with his bat as the Braves smoked the Cubs, 16-5.
There was a lot of hype surrounding Heyward going into the season, and he has mostly delivered. So far this year he is hitting .265 with 14 home runs and 57 RBIs. He has done that on only about 375 at-bats. Part of those 14 home runs were his 2 bombs from last night. He went 4-4 last night with 2 walks, 2 home runs, 4 RBIs and 4 runs. Both of his home runs were smashed to the right field bleachers.
The Braves have been exceptional this season, thanks in no small part to the added young bat of Jason Heyward. They sit atop the NL East with a 2.5 game lead over the Phillies and look to be in great position to make a run at the pennant. For now, their rookie phenom Jason Heyward takes home the “Stat Line of the Night”.
