The Stat Line of the Night — 9/6/10 — Danny Espinosa
Rookie Danny Espinosa was called up to the big league squad for the Washington Nationals just last week when rosters were expanded. As well as he was playing in Triple-A, no one including himself thought that he was going to be having games like this so early in his major league career. His huge night helped propel the Nats past the New York Mets 13-3.
Espinosa, batting out of the 8th spot in the lineup, went 4 for 5 with two home runs, 6 RBIs and 2 runs. The 2 home runs, a grand slam and a solo shot, bring his home run total to 3 on the short season for him. He led off the 3rd with a solo shot, cracked an RBI single in the 5th, and then hit a grand slam in the 6th. He also had another double in the 8th. He took a much deserved curtain call in the 6th after the grand slam.
This kid is basically unheralded, especially on a team that brought up the much-hyped Stephen Strasburg this season. His skills are undeniable so far however, and a 4 hit night like he had last night will help him raise his stock and maybe make the team next season. The Nationals look like a solid young team on the rise with some promising talent starting to come of age. Shortstop Danny Espinosa could be part of that youth movement, but for now he will have to settle for a “Stat Line of the Night”.
