The Stat Line of the Night — 9/12/10 — Matt Forte

Lions Bears FootballIn a Bears-Lions game riddled with controversial calls and decisions yesterday, even the day’s most successful star was not without his blemishes.  Matt Forte had a dominant day for the Bears in a key divisional matchup and helped them overcome a 4 turnover day with his abilities rushing and receiving.  He had some help from his quarterback and solid performances on the offensive line, but the fact of the matter is that he looked like the Matt Forte of 2008 who was looked so promising.

Forte did some damage on the ground, rushing 17 times for 50 yards, but his real damage was done in the air.  He caught 7 passes for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns to steal the show.  The biggest play of the day was a 28 yard reception on a screen pass.  After catching the pass Forte scampered all the way to the endzone to give the Bears a go-ahead touchdown.  That touchdown would hold up after a controversial call in the endzone.  Although Forte did fumble the ball, the Bears were able to recover from that and other turnovers to win 19-14 over the lowly Lions.

The NFC North looks to be completely up in the air right now.  While the PAckers and Vikings have been held out as favorites, the Vikings lost and the Packers did not look as great as previously thought despite winning their game against the Eagles.  The Bears have a chance to compete if Forte can continue at this pace while minimizing mistakes (i.e. fumbles).  For now, he overcame his big fumble to grab “The Stat Line of the Night”.
