The Stat Line of the Night — 10/5/10 — John Wall
It was a slow night in sports, as the only real sport on as I flipped through the channels was preseason basketball. The NBA is something to get excited about, however, as rookie phenom John Wall showed last night in a stellar performance against the Dallas Mavericks. The Wizards highly-touted rookie has played well in summer league games but this was his first test against real NBA talent, even if it was a preseason test.
Wall definitely rose to the challenge last night, leading his team to a 97-94 win. Wall’s uncanny ability to penetrate the lane earned him 11 free throw attempts, but he was also able to find his open teammates for baskets. His passing abilities led to 9 assists to go with his 21 points. He finished the night 6-14 from the field and 9-11 from the line. He also had 4 steals and most notably only 2 turnovers. The main fear with Wall is that even though he has spectacular play-making abilities and athleticism, he is raw and mistake-prone. He showed otherwise last night.
The Wizards have a long way to go after their dismal 26 win season in 2009-2010. Arenas may be back and healthier, and Kirk Hinrich is a welcome addition as well, but Wall will need to take a prominent role for this team to have any real success. He started last night, earning a “Stat Line of the Night”, but its only the preseason. For now.
