It May Not Be Long Before Soccer Balls Are Lighting The World (Video)
The game of soccer has helped connect countries and people all over the world for decades. It may not be long before it is connecting many of these people to some much needed electricity.
Ninety-five percent of the population in Africa is living without any access to electricity. Instead, many of these people have had to settle for burning kerosene indoors, which releases enough fumes to equal the harm caused by smoking two packs of cigarettes per day.
While they may not have any electricity, what many Africans do have is a love for the game of soccer. Four brilliant females from the University of Harvard are looking to turn that love into a new-found source of electricity. As part of the American Express Members Project, they have created a soccer ball that is capable of powering a lamp for up to three hours after only 15 minutes of play.
An invention like this has the ability to not only light the houses of many, but it can also help shine a light on the lives and hearts of those less fortunate individuals around the world who are struggling with poverty on a daily basis. These four women are making a difference and doing their part to make the world a better place. For that, we applaud them.
