The Stat Line of the Night — 10/11/10 — Nick Folk

nick folkA kicker, you ask?  Yes, a kicker.  In the Jets 29-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings last night, the Jets kicker was the MVP.  Sure, if Brett Favre had been able to finish the comeback and not thrown a game-ending interception late in the 4th quarter, he would have earned this honor.  The old magic seems to be gone for Favre, however, as allegations swirl for off-field issues.  Nick Folk, however, rose above the fray to kick his team to victory.

Folk went 5/5 on field goals last night.  They weren’t all chip shots either.  His field goals were not only clutch, but difficult as well.  In the first quarter he nailed a short 25 yarder to put the Jets ahead 3-0.  Then after some back and forth between the two teams with no scoring, Folk hit a 53 yarder that looked like it had enough on it to go 60 or even 65.  He also hit a 22 yard field goal at the end of the half to put his team up 9-0.  He started the second half with more of the same, knocking down a 34 yard field goal and then a 31 yard field goal.

Its rare for a kicker to get any notice outside of making a game-winning kick as time expires in football, but last night was the exception.  Folk was dead-on all night and his 5 field goals were the key to the Jets victory.  His kicking earns him “The Stat Line of the Night”.
