Frozen Fisticuffs Fight Of The Night – The Fight That Set Off Rypien – 10/19/10
Last night brought us three quality fights that were all worthy of our “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” award, but we can only choose one, so we went with the bout that helped set off some rather outrageous events which would occur later on in a game between the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild.
Midway through the first period, the Canucks’ Rick Rypien and the Wild’s Brad Staubitz dropped the gloves and delivered several haymakers before wrestling each other to the ice. Later in the game Rypien was attempting to get in round two, but when Staubitz refused, Rypien delivered a sucker punch to the Wild enforcer’s face before leaving the ice and confronting a fan in the stands.
Perhaps Rypien didn’t feel his first fight was quite good enough to qualify as the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night”, and he wanted to make amends. We appreciate the effort Rypien, but cheap shots and confronting fans will not earn you such honors. You first fight, on the other hand, will.
Here is a look at round one of Rypien vs. Staubitz. You can see what happened afterwards here.
