The Stat Line of the Night — 11/1/10 — Luol Deng

luol dengThe NBA is under way and one of the most exciting young teams around the league is the Chicago Bulls.  They have a great young aspiring superstar in Derrick Rose, a veteran post presence in Carlos Boozer, and a high energy rebounder in Joakim Noah.  Forgotten in that mix of youth and talent is Luol Deng, once thought to have great potential in this league, but who in recent years was hobbled by injuries and mediocrity.  Well the jury may still be out on the 25 year old small forward, as he put up a career night against the Portland Trailblazers last night.

This was the second time Deng had a career high in points against the Blazers, going for 38 against them in 2007.  On this night, he bested that, scoring 40 points in the most efficient way possible.  He went 14-19 from the field and nailed 3 three-pointers as well.  He was able to draw fouls as well, going to the line 11 times and converting on 9 of those tries.  In addition to his scoring efficiency, he snagged 4 rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and even had 1 steal.

The Bulls are clearly behind the Heat, Celtics and Magic in terms of experience and talent in the Eastern Conference right now.  That does not mean that they cannot leapfrog those teams, however, if Rose plays to his potential and Boozer comes back full strength.  What could be an X-factor for this team is Deng, who has the potential to blow up like he did last night.  Only time will tell, but for now he earns “The Stat Line of the Night”.
