Could Shaq Have Saved Notorious B.I.G.’s Life? (Video)

Fourteen years ago yesterday, the rap game was dealt a vicious blow when Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G., was murdered in Los Angeles following the Soul Train Music Awards.  It will forever be remembered as the day the music industry lost one of its brightest young stars, but could it all have been avoided?

Shaq seems to think so.

While playing with the Orlando Magic, Shaq became good friends with Christopher and the two had planned to attend a party together following the awards.  Shaq fell asleep and missed the party.  As for Biggie, he was shot shortly after leaving the party in his SUV around midnight.

Shaq’s mom woke him up to the news that Christopher had been shot.  Since then, the events of that night have lingered on the mind of the NBA superstar.  He even asked the following in his autobiography, “Shaq Talks Back”:

“If I would’ve been standing by his truck, would the killer still have shot? I’ve always asked that question.”

There is no telling what would have happened had Shaq been with Biggie that night.  Would his presence have helped prevent the shooting, or would he have suffered a similar fate?  There is no way to answer such questions, but it doesn’t mean one can’t ponder the possibilities.

Here is a clip documenting the relationship between Biggie and Shaq, and what happened the night of the shooting, with insight from P.Diddy, Lil’ Cease and Shaq himself.
