Fennville High Wins District Title Following Death Of Wes Leonard (Video)

It has been an emotional week for the students, parents, teachers and basketball players at Fennville High School.  Just eight days after team leader Wes Leonard went into cardiac arrest and died on the court following their season finale, the boys on Fennville’s basketball team held heavy hearts in their chest and the Class C district title in their hands thanks to a 51-48 victory over Covert High in the Finals on Friday.

A few weeks ago it was Leonard hitting the game-winning basket in overtime to give his school the victory and help the Blackhawks cap off a perfect 20-0 regular season.  With Wes gone, it was Reid Sexton stepping up at the end this time around, hitting two free-throws late in the game to secure the victory.

Wes’ parents were in attendance for the game, as was his younger brother Mitchell.  At times his mother struggled to watch, while Mitchell was chosen to accept Fennville’s championship trophy in honor of his brother.

It was an emotional scene that helps illustrate how sports can sometimes be a coping mechanism for those who have lost a loved one.  Here is a look at some highlights from the game, award ceremony, and ensuing press conference.
