The Stat Line Of The Night — 4/3/11 — Jaime Garcia

Looking to win their first game of the season and avoid being swept by the San Diego Padres, the St. Louis Cardinals sent right-hander Jaime Garcia to the mound.  He didn’t disappoint, pitching a complete game shutout to lead his club to the 2-0 victory.

Garcia got off to a scorching hot start last season, putting together a 5-2 record and a 1.32 ERA in his first 10 starts.  It appears as though he is ready to better that performance, as the Padres struggled to manufacture any offense off the 24-year-old, who allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out nine.

The season is still very young, but it will be interesting to see how Garcia develops in only his second full year as a starter.  Last year he had some issues during the final month of the season, but still finished with an impressive 13-8 record and a 2.70 ERA.  If he can improve upon those numbers, he could become a dark horse candidate in the NL Cy Young race.  For now her earns our “Stat Line of the Night” for Sunday, April 3, 2011.
