Can Someone Explain To Me What Justin Verlander Was Thinking Here? (Video)

With a runner on first and no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning during Saturday’s game against the Oakland Athletics, the mind of Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander seemed to be thinking “pickoff attempt,” while his body was thinking “pitch to home plate.”  What would ensue appeared to be a hybrid of both, as Verlander quickly stepped off the mound and threw a ball at the feet of the A’s batter, David DeJesus.

The play seemed to confuse everyone involved, including the broadcasters, managers, umpires and even Verlander himself.  It was initially believed that DeJesus was hit by the pitch, but he would eventually be sent back to home plate to complete his at bat, while the Oakland runner was sent to second on the balk.

So what happened Justin?

“I went to go pick one and I didn’t get my body turned.  The way I thought — and this was all in milliseconds — if I just throw it home, they won’t call anything.”

“I saw the video of it and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself.  It might be the first time it happened in general. I thought nothing could happen at the plate. It was funny talking to the umpires. They gave me a hard time about it, too.” [YouTube]

Here is a look at the play that had Verlander laughing and the rest of us scratching our heads.
