This Day In Sports History (June 23rd) – San Antonio Spurs

It was on this day in 2005 that the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons played Game 7 of the NBA Finals.  The Spurs won the game 81-74 to win the franchise’s third championship.

The Spurs easily handled their first three opponents of the playoffs, beating the Denver Nuggets in five games, the Seattle Supersonics in six and the Phoenix Suns in five to reach the finals.  However, the road to the title got a lot tougher when they met the reigning champion Pistons.  It turned out to be a grueling, hard fought seven game series, but in the end the big three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were too much for Detroit to handle and the Spurs walked away with their third championship in the past seven years.

Tim Duncan was named the NBA Finals MVP for the third time in his career, joining Michael Jordan (6), Magic Johnson (3) and Shaquille O’Neal (3) as the only players to win the award three or more times.

Here is a tribute to the 2005 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs.
