This Day In Sports History (July 7th) – Venus Williams

It was on this day in 2007 that the finals for the 121st Wimbledon Championships took place in London, England.  Venus Williams defeated Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-1 to win her fourth Wimbledon title.

At the beginning of the tournament, Venus Williams was ranked #23 and Marion Bartoli was ranked # 18, making them the two lowest seeds to ever make it to a Wimbledon final.  Bartoli made her long-awaited Grand Slam breakthrough by upsetting #3 ranked Jelena Jankovic and then knocking off the world’s #1 ranked female tennis player, Justine Henin, in the semi-finals.  Bartoli’s win over Henin is considered one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history, as she entered the match as a 10-1 underdog.

The Williams sisters have dominated at Wimbledon, winning nine of the last 12 titles at the All England Club.  Venus holds five of those titles, while Serena owns four.

Here are highlights from the 2007 Women’s Wimbledon final.
