The Stat Line Of The Night — 7/21/11 — Justin Verlander

Justin Verlander has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball this season.  He is currently ranked in the top three in the entire League in wins, ERA, strikeouts and innings pitched.  However, he entered last night’s game against the Minnesota Twins coming off his worst start of the season, as he allowed five runs (four earned) in six innings against the White Sox on July 15.  He was looking to rebound from that loss last night and he did just that.

Verlander put on the type of performance we have become accustomed to seeing from him this season, pitching eight solid innings and allowing only five hits and one run against while striking out nine batters.  Phil Coke would come in to relieve him in the ninth and allowed one run, but it wasn’t enough for the Twins, as the Tigers had already scored six of their own, en route to the 6-2 victory.

With the win, Verlander now has 13 on the season, second to only the Yankees’ C.C. Sabathia (14).  And in addition to the win, he also earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, July 21, 2011.
