The Stat Line Of The Night — 8/15/11 — Jim Thome

When Alex Rodriguez was approaching the 600th home run of his career, a feat he reached on August 4, 2010, everyone in America took notice.  Media outlets across the country followed the story and it seemed as though every American sports fan was following A-Rod’s pursuit of the historic milestone.  The Minnesota Twins’ Jim Thome was approaching that very same milestone, although, you would be lucky to find any mention of it anywhere besides SportsCenter.

Sitting at 598 home runs, Jim Thome hit career home runs no. 599 and 600 last night during a game against the Detroit Tigers.  He went 3-for-4 at the plate, with 5 RBIs, leading the Twins to the 9-6 victory.  Thome became just the eighth player in Major League history to reach the 600 home run mark, and he did so without any allegations of steroid use to taint his achievement.  Many may not want to give Thome the credit he deserves for reaching 600 career homers, but we will, as he earns our “Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, August 15, 2011.
