The Stat Line Of The Night – 8/16/11 – Justin Verlander

Yesterday, it was Jim Thome gracing ‘The Stat Line Of The Night.’ Today, it’s one of his favorite pitchers, Justin Verlander (Thome has seven home runs off of Verlander in his career, the third most he’s hit off of any pitcher).

Verlander bolstered his Cy Young resume last night against Thome’s squad by throwing 7.2 innings of one run baseball while striking out eight batters opposite just one walk, improving his overall record this season to 18-5. Verlander is 14-2 with a 1.60 ERA and 130 strikeouts opposite 21 walks in his last 16 games. 14 of Verlander’s wins this season come after a Tigers loss, too, including last night’s.

Verlander was also the first to 200 strikeouts this season, reaching 200 on his fourth strikeout of the game against Justin Morneau. According to Elias, Verlander joins Curt Schilling, Steve Carlton, Vida Blue, Fergie Jenkins, and Mickey Lolich as the only pitchers since 1970 to reach 18 wins, 200 innings pitched, and 200 strikeouts by August 16. Four of the previous six went on to win the Cy Young.

Right now, it’s Verlander’s Cy Young Award to lose and that is why he has earned himself our ‘State Line Of The Night’ for Tuesday, August 17, 2011.
