Didier Drogba Knocked Unconscious Following Nasty Collision (Video)
I myself would argue that soccer is far from being anything close to a contact sport, however, those who feel otherwise may be inclined to use the following video to prove me wrong. It comes from Saturday’s English Premier League game between Chelsea and Norwich, which saw Blues striker Didier Drogba get knocked unconscious following a nasty collision with Norwich keeper John Ruddy.
Drogba went up up for a header, and although he was offside on the play, he was still leveled midair by Ruddy, causing the Ivory Coast international to come crashing down and smack his head on the pitch at Stamford Bridge. He remained unconscious for several minutes before being carted off the field wearing a breathing aid and taken to the hospital. He continues to recover from a concussion in London under the supervision of Chelsea’s medical staff.
As for Ruddy, he was not penalized for the challenge on Drogba, but he was assessed a straight red card following a challenge on The Blues’ Ramires in the 80th minute. Frank Lampard would capitalize on the ensuing penalty kick, and Juan Mata added another goal in extra time to give Chelsea the 3-1 victory.
